Joanna Newsom - Music Review

If you are looking for some music to just put and chillax then this is the artist for you. Perfect for balmy days sitting outside drinking cider.
Joanna Newsom is a harpist, pianist and singer song-writer from California. Known as one of the most prominent members of the modern psych folk movement, her sound is folky with strong undertones of Appalachian musicand avant-garde modernism.
Basically giver her a listen yeah?

Is Fashion Friendly To Our Planet?

I don’t get it, why use materials that drain the planet of its finite energy sources or dye yarns in chemicals that poison the land, the sea, the air we breathe and the garment workers? Because that’s what all the large producers of textiles are doing. However, it is to be said that designers, manufacturers and consumers all around the globe are beginning to realise the severity of the effects of the fashion world on the environment though still not enough action has been taken. People need to realise that the manufacturing process and the disposal is just as, if not more important, than the performance and aesthetics of the product.
There is an imperative need for industrial products and processes to become sustainable.  The three main principles for conserving the environment are simple:
Avoidance of material which may put the environment under stress.
Avoidance of consumption of materials.
Recycling of used materials.

Fashion changes constantly. The fast-paced changes in the fashion industry results in waste and encourages consumers to buy items unnecessarily. Pressure from advertising and publicity pushes the consumer to keep up with fashion. Designers and consumers should be thinking about the future. Designers need to encourage a longer-term use of products and they should slow down the changing of fashion. All consumers need to change their views from buying because you WANT to buying because you NEED . The manufacturers also have a place in this; they should offer the service of taking the products back after use, and these should then be recycled.
Clothing should never be thrown away, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” clothing could be sent to less fortunate people, or be  sold to raise money in a charity shop, even your friends or family may appreciate them. If the clothing is completely ruined, the material and components can be recycled separately. Clothes can also be adapted, changing the size, shape, colour etc.
I believe that we are on the way to viewing clothing and its manufacture differently. Eco labels are being advertised by famous models and top designers are also putting their names to eco fashion, not only is this clothing good for the environment, much of it also raises money for several good causes. The demand for eco friendly clothing is increasing, and will only continue to grow, prices have already dropped and it’s very affordable and available in many high street shops such as New Look and Dorothy Perkins. With the backing of celebrities, top models, designers and stores, the sale of eco fashion will only increase.
Please remember that everyone is responsible for helping to save the planet, do your bit.

NATURE, NURTUREA AND OUR FUTURE

Nature for me is most relevantly defined as the “undomesticated condition of plants or animals.” How we nurture today’s population so that they take more care of the flora and fauna of our natural world, thereby maintaining their existence for the future is a question that has become a preoccupation for many people in the world.
Our society must ensure that it will always be possible for animals to roam freely in their natural habitat. Until 2007, the nearest I had come to experiencing this was in the wildlife parks of Great Britain but in the August of 2007 I travelled to Bolivia where I visited the amazing Salt Flats and Lake Titicaca, seeing the breeding grounds of many species of Flamingo. I also visited the jungle, encountering perhaps more wildlife than I really wished to! It was so much more interesting and educational to see these animals in their natural habitat.
In recent years, we have witnessed the destruction of vast acreage of rainforest, the melting of ice caps, pollution of seas and air plus over-fishing and hunting- all of which have greatly contributed to a vast decline in numbers of many species, predominant amongst them are the Tiger and the Polar bear. We are hearing more and more about carbon emissions and how much damage they have made to the ozone layer. Climate change has been starkly evident when even the United Kingdom has seen hurricanes, tornados, droughts and this year, the worst flooding in over 100 years. Hardly a day passes when we do not hear that some country is experiencing a natural disaster caused by climate change.

We have become a “throw-away” society. My grandmother lived through the Second World War when the rationing of food was in place. Due to a shortage of food my granny learnt never to waste anything. Her family made do with what they had, cooking meals form scratch and were probably a lot healthier for it. They used baskets to collect their shopping not plastic bags, walked to school and the shops and ate fresh food on a daily basis. We have become a spoilt society and are not better off because of it. Caring for the environment should be taught from a young age in school. Schoolchildren must also be taught more about dietary matters and cooking as the problem of obesity in England today is not just down to a lack of income. In the future, we could learn some lessons from our past.
The answer therefore lies in our own hands. In order to have a future we must learn to take much more care of the natural world and hope that the problems we have created for ourselves are not insurmountable.
If everyone took some responsibility for change I am sure that a huge transformation could be achieved. A problem exists; now let us find the answer.

All the pictures are from my trip to Bolivia. GO THERE IT'S FRIGGIN AWESOME

London in Love

Vogue Italia Editorial. We were told in class if you aren't buying Vogue Italia, you don't REALLY want to make it in the fashion industry. I have to admit I had only bought it once before I was told this as it isn't sold anywhere near where I live, but I had always looked online at the pictures...I can't read Italian anyway! It is a magazine worth buying though the photography is first class.

The Scouting Book for Boys

I was looking up Noah and The whale as I was going to do a music review on their new track and I stumbled across this film one of their songs is featured on.
The film is about best friends David and Emily and their life on a coastal caravan park. Their world gets turned upside down when Emily is forced to move away. David helps his best friend to hide out in a cave on a remote part of the beech to prevent her from moving away. The police soon get involved in the missing persons case, and David's innocent idea to save his friend get complicated. The real reason for Emily's escape comes to light, shattering David's world. Swept up in a situation out of his control, and with his feelings for his best friend growing stranger by the day, David is forced to take action.

The director of Slumdog Millionaire and the writer from Skins, surely a winning duo.

If you think you recognise the boy in it...you do! He is from This is England and  Eden Lake.
Thomas Turgoose is a brilliant actor, and I have heard that he is a real saving grace in this movie. Give the trailer a watch!

Katie Goodchild on Breaking Bones, Giggles and Mercedes Benz

(As part of my Fashion Journalism course we had to interview a classmate. I decided to quiz my friend Katie (my partner from the photo shoot. Here is the result).   Check out her blog here.

Katie’s cheeky grin and naughty sense of humor are obvious as soon as she opens her mouth. But is she as mischievous as she looks?  “I broke a girls arm once.” Laughing she reassures me “it was an accident; I just swung my bag at her.” Later revealing the girl in question is still her best friend.
Born and raised in a small village in East-Anglia Katie claims a “sheltered life” very different from the one she leads at university. “I am happy at UCA. The course is good and I have amazing housemates we all get along great and have a giggle. I miss home a lot though.”
It’s not just her family that Katie misses though, the name “Joshua” pops up more than once. She blushes when admitting he is infact “still at school and only 17.” Katie’s smile brightens as we pursue the subject of “the boyfriend”, “I can’t think of an ideal date with him, he did cook me pasta last night, bit of a disaster, he clearly hadn’t cooked it before!”
Her guiltiest pleasure? “My housemates would say underage sex!” She laughs while answering and also reveals a penchant for “chav music.”
She pauses thoughtfully for a moment before answering that her perfect day out would be “shopping with all the money in the world and going out for a meal with friends at the end of the day” or “my mum’s home cooking and just relaxing with her.”
Laughing infectiously whilst pushing  her short blonde bob behind her ears she says“in ten years I want to be in a successful job, earning a shit load of money, with a big house near London with a walk in wardrobe and a Mercedes.”

Allie Moss- Music review

You may recognise this song from a BT TV advert. It's by Allie Moss,  folky-esque singer from Jersey. She has two singles and an EP by the name of "Passerby." It's sweet chilled out music. Give it a listen.
